<h2>How to Train CopyCat for Rotoscoping</h2>
<a href="https://learn.foundry.com/nuke/content/reference_guide/air_nodes/copycat.html">CopyCat</a> works by analyzing a small set of hand-rotoscoped frames and learning to apply that same matte extraction across an entire shot. The key to getting great results? Training it properly. Here’s how:

<h3>1. Roto a Few Key Frames</h3>
Before CopyCat can generate mattes, it needs training data—clean mattes that show it what to learn.
<ul>
<li>Pick 5–10 unique keyframes throughout your shot. Choose frames where the subject’s shape varies the most (e.g., different poses or angles).</li>
<li>Create precise mattes using Nuke’s standard roto tools. The better these keyframes, the better CopyCat will perform.</li>
</ul>
Example: If you’re rotoscoping a person running, choose frames where their legs are in different positions.

<h3>2. Set Up and Train CopyCat</h3>
Once you have your training frames, it’s time to set up the CopyCat node.
<ul>
<li>Add a CopyCat node to your Nuke script.</li>
<li>Connect your original footage to the Input and your hand-made mattes to the Ground Truth input.</li>
</ul>
Next, adjust your training settings:
<ul>
<li>Start with low iterations (~1000-2000) for quick tests.</li>
<li>If the results are good, increase iterations.</li>
</ul>
Click Start Training, and let Nuke process the data. Depending on your settings, training might take a few minutes to an hour.

<li>Apply It to the Full Shot
Once training is complete and you're happy with the results, it's time to apply it to the full shot.</li>

<li>Click Create Inference in the CopyCat node. This generates an Inference node, which is used to process the full sequence.</li>
<li>Connect your full clip to the new Inference node.</li>
<li>CopyCat will now auto-generate mattes for every frame, saving you hours of manual roto.</li>
</ul>
If the results need improvement, refine your training frames, retrain the model, and apply again.

Master Nuke Compositing: Free Introduction Course to Nuke

The Dune films have some of the most visually stunning effects in modern cinema, so when I saw Dune: Part Two nominated (and winning!) Best Visual Effects at the Oscars, I knew I had to make something inspired by it.
Armed with a few simple materials, a green screen, and some <a href="https://actionvfx.com/products">assets from ActionVFX</a>, I created my own Dune-inspired shot in my at-home studio. Here’s how I did it.

<h2>Step 1: Building the Filt Plug for the Stillsuit</h2>
If you’ve seen Dune, you’ll recognize the Filt Plug— the small black tube that connects from the back of the head to the nostrils in the stillsuit. You can buy them for cosplay, but I wanted the challenge of making one myself.
So, I took a trip to Lowe’s and found exactly what I needed: flexible tubing and a 90-degree connector. Back at my workspace, I:
<ul>
<li>Cut the tubing a little longer than necessary.</li>
<li>Trimmed the sharp point off the connector.</li>
<li>Heated and molded the tubing to fit my face (without burning myself, thankfully).</li>
<li>Adjusted the fit by bending it over my ear and trimming the excess.</li>
</ul>
With that, the Filt Plug was done! Next, I grabbed my shemagh from my airsoft days, and it was time to set up the shot.

<h2>Step 2: Lighting and Filming</h2>
Lighting plays a massive role in selling the illusion. To match the Dune aesthetic, I set up:
<ul>
<li>A strong light over my shoulder to mimic the harsh desert sun.</li>
<li>An LED panel with a softbox in front of me for subtle fill lighting.</li>
<li>Tube lights to evenly light the green screen.</li>
<li>A box fan to add a little movement for realism.</li>
</ul>
To create the effect of dried skin from the desert air, I relied on my lack of a skincare routine—finally, a benefit! With everything in place, I recorded multiple takes, eventually choosing the most natural-looking performance.

<h2>Step 3: Keying and Compositing the Shot in After Effects</h2>
Once filming was done, I moved into After Effects to composite everything together. Here’s how I built the scene:
<ul>
<li>Pre-composing – The footage was shot in 6K, but working at that resolution isn’t practical or fast. I pre-composed it so After Effects would treat it as 2K when applying effects.</li>
<li>Keying the Green Screen – Using the built-in Keylight plugin, I removed the background and adjusted the alpha contrast.</li>
<li>Flipping the Background for Lighting Consistency – Since my highlights were on the left and the background’s were on the right, I flipped the desert plate horizontally to match.</li>

<h3>Adding the Sandstorm</h3>
To create the iconic dust storms of Arrakis, I had to get creative. By repurposing <a href="https://www.actionvfx.com/collections/blizzard-snow-stock-footage">Blizzard Snow</a> assets from ActionVFX, I got exactly what I was looking for. With a few adjustments:
<ul>
<li>I flipped them horizontally to match the wind direction.</li>
<li>Used Unmult to remove the black background.</li>
<li>Tinted the snow an orange-brown hue.</li>
<li>Staggered multiple layers with different scale, color, and luminance to add depth.</li>
</ul>
To maintain visibility of the dunes, I duplicated the background, brought it above some of the Blizzard Snow layers, masked only the bottom, and feathered it. This helped blend everything seamlessly.
<h3>Creating the Spice Particles</h3>
No Dune-inspired shot is complete without spice floating in the air. I used ActionVFX <a href="https://www.actionvfx.com/collections/dust-particles-stock-footage">Dust Particles</a> and:
<ul>
<li>Tinted them red-orange to match the look of spice.</li>
<li>Set the blending mode to Add for a glowing effect.</li>
<li>Adjusted speed and opacity for a more organic look.</li>
</ul>
<h2>Step 4: Enhancing the Shot with the Blue Eyes Effect</h2>
In the Dune universe, exposure to spice turns a person’s eyes blue. To achieve this, I:
<ul>
<li>Motion-tracked my eyes to keep the effect locked in place.</li>
<li>Used an <a href="https://www.actionvfx.com/collections/eye-textures-stock-footage">eye texture</a> from ActionVFX to enhance the vibrancy.</li>
<li>Created a blue solid layer and set it to Color blending mode.</li>
<li>Masked and feathered the eyes for a natural transition.</li>
</ul>
This process required a lot of manual <a href="https://www.actionvfx.com/blog/how-to-do-motion-tracking-with-mocha-ae-beginner-friendly-after-effects-tutorial">tracking</a>, but the result was worth it!
<h2>Step 5: Final Touches – Noise, Lens Flares, and Camera Shake</h2>
To make the shot feel even more immersive, I added:
<ul>
<li>Organic Dust Motion – Using directional blur and noise textures, I made the foreground Blizzard Snow layers feel more like sand particles, and simulated the chaotic movement of dust particles in the wind.</li>
<li>A Lens Flare – I used an <a href="https://www.actionvfx.com/collections/Icon-anamorphic-lens-flares-stock-footage">Icon: Anamorphic Lens Flare</a> from ActionVFX, tweaking the contrast and hue for a warm, cinematic glow.</li>
<li>Subtle Camera Shake – Added a slight handheld effect for realism.</li>
<li>Final Color Grade – Using DaVinci Resolve, I fine-tuned the colors for a more cohesive desert look.</li>
</ul>

<h2>The Final Result</h2>
After all these steps, the shot was complete! What started as a small room with a green screen became an intense, cinematic sandstorm straight out of Arrakis.

Armed with a few simple materials, a green screen, and some assets from ActionVFX, I created my own Dune-inspired shot in my at-home studio with After Effects.

If you’re an ActionVFX user working in Adobe After Effects, you might have run into issues with certain assets in the DRAGONcolor2 / REDgamma4 color space. Since After Effects doesn’t natively support this format, getting the most out of these assets requires a few extra steps.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to properly interpret, transform, and composite DRAGONcolor2 assets while keeping all the original data intact.
<h2>Why Some Assets Use DRAGONcolor2 / REDgamma4</h2>
Many of our older assets were filmed on RED DSMC2 cameras, which used DRAGONcolor2 / REDgamma4 to retain as much data as possible. While this was a great choice for quality, Adobe After Effects doesn’t play nice with this color space—meaning your assets may look washed out or incorrect when imported. You might notice this on our older pyro collections like Window Fire or Gas Explosions Vol. 1, among a few others.
The good news? There's an easy way to fix this thanks to our friends at RED.

<h2>The Fix: Custom LUTs from RED</h2>
To solve this issue, RED developed custom LUTs specifically for ActionVFX users. These LUTs convert different RED gammas into a more usable format, making compositing in After Effects much easier.

<h2>How to Set Up DRAGONcolor2 / REDgamma4 Assets in After Effects</h2>
Follow these steps to properly set up your assets and maintain full color accuracy.

1. Set the Correct Input Color Space
<ul>
<li>Right-click your asset in the Project Window → Interpret Footage &gt; Main</li>
<li>Go to the Color Tab</li>
<li>Under Override Media Color Space, select: Input/RED/Input - RED - Linear - DRAGONcolor2</li>
</ul>
At this point, the colors will still look off—but don’t worry, we’re about to fix that.
2. Apply the RED LUT in Lumetri
<ul>
<li>Add the Lumetri Color effect to your asset</li>
<li>Under Basic Correction, locate the Input LUT option</li>
</ul>
Instead of using the default presets, we need to add one of the custom LUTs:
<ul>
<li>Open File Explorer</li>
<li>For Windows, navigate to: Local Disk &gt; Program Files &gt; Adobe &gt; Adobe After Effects &gt; Support Files &gt; Lumetri &gt; LUTs &gt; Technical</li>
<li>For Mac navigate to: Macintosh HD &gt; Applications &gt; Adobe After Effects &gt; Adobe After Effects.app (right click to “Show Package Contents”) &gt; Lumetri &gt; LUTs &gt; Technical</li>
<li>Drag and drop the RG4_2_LIN_64.cube LUT from the RED LUT pack into this folder</li>
<li>Restart After Effects</li>
<li>Now, in Lumetri’s Input LUT section, select RG4_2_LIN_64</li>
</ul>
Once applied, your footage will now display correctly in <a href="https://actionvfx.com/blog/how-to-use-aces-in-after-effects">ACES</a>, retaining all of its original data for proper compositing. Once the LUT is added to the correct folder, it will always be available in future projects.
<h2>Making This Process Even Faster</h2>
If you’re working with a lot of our DRAGONcolor2 / REDgamma4 assets in the same project, you can save time by applying your initial footage interpretations to multiple files at once.
Use “Remember Interpretation”
<ul>
<li>After setting up one asset, right-click it in the Project Window</li>
<li>Select Interpret Footage &gt; Remember Interpretation</li>
<li>Now, apply this interpretation to multiple assets at once by selecting them, right-clicking, and choosing Apply Interpretation</li>
<li>Add Lumetri once the asset is in your Comp</li>
<li>Select your RG4_2_LIN_64 LUT as your Input LUT</li>
</ul>
Final Thoughts
By following this workflow, you’ll ensure your DRAGONcolor2 / REDgamma4 assets composite seamlessly into your After Effects projects without any color issues.

If you’re looking for 2023’s standout films, Godzilla Minus One is hard to miss. Not only did it tell a compelling story—something fans often felt was missing in previous Godzilla films—but its visual effects were phenomenal. And to top it all off, the film’s VFX team at Shirogumi walked away with a well-earned <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3q7SaXhCPE">Oscar® for Best Visual Effects</a>, marking the first time a Japanese film has won an Academy Award® for VFX.
What’s even more impressive? They did it all on a $15 million budget, while most blockbusters cost well over $150 million. We’re excited that ActionVFX was one of the key resources Shirogumi compositors used to streamline production and create hollywood-level VFX.
With so many high-budget films <a href="https://3dvf.com/en/no-cgi-is-really-just-invisible-cgi-a-must-watch-series-of-videos/">downplaying or even lying</a> about the work of VFX artists, it’s refreshing to see the artists at Shirogumi getting the recognition they deserve for their extraordinary VFX in Godzilla Minus One.
We had the privilege of interviewing <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm7111903/">Ryo Matsumoto</a>, one of the nine compositing artists at Shirogumi’s Chofu Studio. Ryo’s team won the Oscar® for Best Visual Effects for their work on the film. Ryo gave us a behind-the-scenes look at Godzilla Minus One and talked about how ActionVFX helped them create award-winning VFX on a budget.

<h1>Shirogumi: The VFX Studio Behind Godzilla Minus One</h1>
<a href="https://shirogumi.com/">Shirogumi</a> is one of Japan’s top VFX studios, known for handling 3D animation, simulations, and complex effects on limited budgets. You might have seen their work in Parasyte 1 and 2 or The Eternal Zero. But with Godzilla Minus One, they’ve taken things to the next level.
<h1>VFX in Godzilla Minus One</h1>
Godzilla Minus One features 610 VFX shots, making up an incredible two-thirds of the entire movie. The VFX team responsible for the film consisted of 35 artists, 9 of whom were responsible for compositing. They used a mix of Nuke for compositing, Houdini for simulations, and Maya and Blender for CG.
Ryo explained, “In order to make the best use of limited resources, each of us had several different roles other than working on individual shots. Some of us were on set, some worked on previews, R&amp;D, or look development. Some worked on both CG and compositing.” Ryo himself was responsible for compositing 88 shots. He also worked on look development and creating Python scripts for Nuke.

Shirogumi’s success really boiled down to smart use of resources, a talented team, and great communication with the director.
<h2>Streamlined Approval Process Led to Better Communication</h2>
Unlike many large VFX teams that deal with long approval chains, Shirogumi had a major advantage—writer and director <a href="https://www.vfxvoice.com/takashi-yamazaki-achieves-kaiju-size/">Takashi Yamazaki</a> was also the VFX supervisor. This meant the artists had direct access to him for feedback.
“The director is usually stationed in the studio, so we, the artists, can ask him to check our shots whenever we're ready. Once we get approval from the director, we are free to improve the quality as much as we want. Sometimes we even suggest adding new shots if we think that makes it better,” Ryo shared.
<h2>Limited Practical Effects Helped Them Stick to a Budget</h2>
With a modest budget, the use of practical effects was limited. Instead, <a href="https://www.actionvfx.com/blog/how-to-create-epic-set-extensions-with-vfx">CG set extensions</a> and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HrxAAcB2dM">VFX elements</a> from ActionVFX helped build the realistic scenes, saving millions of dollars.
For example, as Yamazaki mentions in this breakdown, all of the ships in the film use the same practical set, and illusions of movement were created using a combination of cranes and actor performance.

This breakdown does a good job of showing how intricate the VFX team’s work needed to be, but also how effective it was.

Far from being a disadvantage, their use of VFX allowed them to tell a story that would not be possible without the technologies of our day. Godzilla’s head alone had a 200 million polygon count. As director Yamazaki said in an interview, “Before all the digital technology and what we have access to today, when Godzilla was still filmed using a suit, a lot of the physical limitations of a rubber suit implied that it was only the size of a human. That limited what filmmakers could do with things like the level of detail regarding how Godzilla affects its surrounding water or the destruction of cities.”
Maybe Christopher Nolan should have gotten the memo from Yamazaki…
<h2>ActionVFX Stock Footage Saved Time &amp; Money</h2>
One of the tools that gave the team at Shirogumi a significant leg up was the availability of VFX stock elements. Specifically, the team leaned on <a href="https://www.actionvfx.com/products">ActionVFX’s assets</a>.

Ryo explained how critical these elements were: “There are times when you just need to place atmospheric smoke, fire, or dust explosions around Godzilla's feet. That's when ActionVFX comes in handy.” He also noted that using pre-shot, realistic elements helped ground the CG sequences, creating a more believable final product.

Before we begin, ensure you have the following:

<li>A basic understanding of Blender's interface and tools.</li>

<h3>Step 1: How to Set Up Your VDB Shader</h3>
<ul>
<li>Open Blender and load the free VDB shader you downloaded.</li>
<li>Use Ctrl + O to open the shader file.</li>
<li>Extract the files from the .zip and open the .blend file.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Step 2: Setting Up the Scene</h3>
Creating the Environment
<ul>
<li>Decide on your environment. For this tutorial, we'll use a cityscape inspired by the show Fallout.</li>
<li>Install the Blender GIS plugin:</li>
<li>Go to Edit &gt; Preferences &gt; Add-ons &gt; Install.</li>
<li>Locate the GIS plugin .zip file, install, and enable it.</li>
<li>Close the Preferences window and access the GIS tab in the 3D Viewport by pressing N.</li>
</ul>
Importing Map Data
<ul>
<li>In the GIS tab, select Web geodata &gt; Import OSM.</li>
<li>Search for the desired location or use coordinates to pinpoint your area.</li>
<li>Extract the area into a plane and obtain the elevation data using the Get Elevation option.</li>
<li>Import buildings using GIS &gt; Basemap &gt; Get OSM. Ensure elevate from object is enabled.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Step 3: Texturing the Scene</h3>
<ul>
<li>Download a seamless glass building texture from Textures.com.</li>
<li>In Blender, open new windows for the UV Editor and Shader Editor.</li>
<li>Create a new texture and name it Glass.</li>
<li>In the Shader Editor, add an Image Texture, load your texture, and link it to the base color.</li>
</ul>
Use UV Mapping to apply the texture:
<ul>
<li>Enter side view (NumPad 3 or NumPad 1).</li>
<li>Select buildings and enter Edit Mode (Tab).</li>
<li>Unwrap UVs (U) and adjust the texture in the UV Editor.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Step 4: Adding HDRI Lighting</h3>
Add an HDRI environment for realistic lighting:
<ul>
<li>Go to the World tab in the Properties panel.</li>
<li>Click Color &gt; Environment Texture and load your HDRI file.</li>
<li>Adjust the lighting to enhance the overall scene.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Step 5: Importing and Positioning the Explosion</h3>
Import the VDB explosion asset:

<li>Go to File &gt; Import &gt; Volume and select your VDB file.</li>
</ul>
Position the explosion in your scene:
<ul>
<li>Scale it appropriately using S and move it with G.</li>
<li>Adjust the shader settings to match your scene's lighting.</li>

<h3>Step 6: Final Adjustments and Rendering</h3>

<li>Fine-tune the position and scale of your explosion.</li>

Set up your camera for the best shot:

<li>Align the camera to your view (Ctrl + Alt + NumPad 0).</li>
<li>Adjust the view clipping if necessary.</li>
